All Aboard....Union Terminal next Stop!

On April 25, 2011 - members of the LAC visited Cincinnati Union Terminal. Originally built in 1933 as the Union Terminal train station, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

The building is flanked on either side by curving wings. An illuminated fountain, cascade and pool are in the center foreground. On either side of the main doors, bas-relief figures designed by Maxfield Keck symbolize Commerce and Transportation. As Amanda said "Holy cr*p - this is amazing!"

The tour began in the rotunda. It is a large open domed-ceiling area, with beautiful murals painted on the ceiling and walls.

The LAC also toured the Cincinnati History Museum (part of Union Terminal). The Cincinnati History Museum opened in 1990 and is one of the largest and most significant urban history museums in the country. The Cincinnati History Museum displays materials and related aspects of the history of Cincinnati and the surrounding region. Permanent exhibits include a re-creation of the Cincinnati Public Landing of the late 1850s, where you can step aboard a 94-foot side-wheel steamboat.

Keith got tired during the tour and decided a nap was in order.

Early settlers, like Amanda, would take their boats and turn them into houses once they reached their destination. Talk about recycling! (Note: Amanda does not currently live in her boat.)

Ha Ha, Jason! You did not get me! I'm going to Hollywood!

LAC Visits Conference Sites

Wow!! The LAC visited the conference and hotel sites for SACRAO 2012 – Marriot Rivercenter and Northern Kentucky Convention Center. We toured the hotel and were treated to a fantastic lunch at 10 West (within the hotel). The restaurant overlooks the Ohio River and offers outdoor balcony seating around a fire pit (weather permitting.) We enjoyed delicious appetizers including edamame hummus (Jason knew the name of this green delight) with warm pita bread and tasty home-made potato chips and dip. It was hard to choose from the variety of lunch offerings which included specialized sandwiches and burgers to gourmet salads. Needless to say, everything was wonderful and the service top notch! The hotel lobby and world’s largest indoor gazebo are even more impressive in person and all the staff we encountered on our tour were happy to answer questions and offered immediate smiles and hellos. Each room we visited offered a river view and comfortable beds. The hotel is conveniently located next to the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and accessible via the enclosed walkway (available at the lobby level.)

As you exit the short walkway – you arrive at the site of our conference, Northern Kentucky Convention Center. All conference and ball rooms are located on the same level – no need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find your way back. The ballrooms and vendor area are well lit and spacious. Jason and Rheanna attempted to waltz and did not run into anything. (We may be signing them up for Dancing with the Registrars!) Again, the staff members are helpful and very excited about the SACRAO conference.

All in all, the LAC agreed that we have found the perfect spot for SACRAO 2012. We will begin touring the town and sampling local attractions and flavors in the next couple of weeks. Be sure to check back for the next update!
